In Memoriam

Varadaraj Chandrashekar

Varadaraj Chandrashekar, Ph.D., passed away 24 July 2006. Dr. Chandrashekar received his Ph.D. in Zoology (Endocrinology) in 1974 from Rutgers State University and was an eminent faculty member in the Department of Physiology at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, Illinois, for the past 24 yr. Although he retired 2 yr ago, Dr. Chandrashekar never terminated his research and he remained an active member and contributor to the Society for the Study of Reproduction (SSR).

Dr. Chandrashekar was a research professor who was dedicated to the field of physiology with special interests in utilizing transgenic mice expressing various GH genes as well as evaluating the factors that are involved in leading to these changes. His research was also related to the influence of GH/IGF-I on pituitary-Leydig cell function in aged mice. Dr. Chandrashekar published more than 80 papers and book chapters in his career. He presented over 45 abstracts at international and national conferences, including SSR's annual meetings. Due to his hard work and dedication, Dr. Chandrashekar was named to the Editorial Board of Biology of Reproduction. In 1994, Dr. Chandrashekar was honored by being named in Who's Who in Science and Engineering for his contributions to the field of science.

Dr. Chandrashekar's dedication, hard work, striving for perfection, and contributions to science will never be forgotten, and he will be dearly missed. His wife, Padma Chandrashekar, a physician, along with their daughter, Rupa Chandrashekar, who recently completed her Ph.D. in Rehabilitation, live in Carbondale, Illinois.
