St. Louis, Missouri Porter reported that a 60 min long cross-transfusion with pregnant donors reduces in
ovariectomized nonpregnant rabbits both the frequency and magnitude of intrauterine pressure
(IUP). On the basis of this observation, he postulated "the existence of a second myometrial
inhibitory substance which acts in conjunction with progesterone in maintaining pregnancy." This experiment of Porter has been repeated. Both the frequency and magnitude of IUP
remained stable during cross-transfusion, regardless of whether the donors were pregnant or
nonpregnant, except when cyanosis signaled respiratory problems. These results do not
substantiate Porter's observations nor his postulate.
